The hardest part is getting the perfect photograph of your pet. They just don't sit still for long enough! But here are a couple of tips to help you get the photograph I am after. A camera or smart phone image is fine, so long as the pictures are taken in natural light.
Proper lighting brings out subtle tones in your pet's eyes and fur. This lets me see details clearly. The better the photo, the better the end result.
Take your photos in good natural lighting. Make sure your pet is facing the light source e.g. towards the sun or towards the window.
The angle from which you take your photos can alter the proportions of your pet, which you want to avoid to keep the portrait accurate.
Do take your photos from your pets eye level! And yes! you may have to get on the floor.
Some tips for the best photo possible!
You can ask someone to help by standing by the photographer’s side, holding a treat - nothing like a bit of bribery to get your pet's attention!
Just take a few slightly different angles and do both sides, to see which you prefer.
If you don’t want the collar etc. on the portrait, just let me know before I start the commission.
I know it can be very hard getting all your pets to sit still and be in one photo, trust me, I have two black labs, they never sit still together! So, what I can do to make it easier for you, is to combine different photos.
What I need from you to make this work, is that they are taken at the same angle and similar if not the same lighting.
If they are taken at different angles their proportions will be completely different and the commission would not look right. Likewise with the lighting, if one pet is taken in dark light and the other in bright light, they will look very different and the commission would not work. So, please follow my guidelines for taking the images.
So hopefully - fingers and paws crossed- you should have a few photographs that you could use for the portrait.
Choose the photographs that show their personality.
Send them all my way and we can discuss further which one would be the best to use.
Hopefully you have already decided what size portrait you are wanting, I can always advise you if you are struggling. Please don't be afraid to ask any questions you may have!
If it's just the one subject on the portrait, you can choose any size. However, if it's two or more subjects on one portrait you may have to choose a bigger size. The bigger the portrait the more detail I can put into your pets.
Once I get the photographs, I can book you into my schedule and give you an approximate timescale
If you do require your portrait for a certain date/deadline please could you let me know at least a month in advance, just so I can keep my timetable open for you. If it’s urgent, again we can discuss the timing required!
Prices are based on the medium selected, size of the piece and how many subjects are in one portrait; please see more information on prices in the prices section.
I am able to merge photos if you don't like all aspects of your chosen photo. Do please get in contact before your commission if you would like any adjustments to your portrait.
As you can see in the photo here, I added in an extra leg for 'Nipper' because my customer felt the photo was missing something.
